The Promises
of a New Year
新年新希望,订定目标不迷惘
New Year’s, one of the most popular holidays in the world, is
actually the oldest of all holidays. It was first observed by the
Babylonians about 4000 years ago. While some New Year’s celebrations
may seem extravagant today, the parties in ancient Babylonia lasted
11 days.
Long ago during New Year’s celebrations, people made loud noises to
scare away the old year’s evil spirits. Now, we make noise just for
fun. Another New Year’s custom that has endured since the time of
the Babylonians is making resolutions. The Babylonians’ most common
goal was
to return borrowed farm equipment. Nowadays, people are more
concerned with things like losing weight and quitting smoking.
Whether or not the Babylonians were any more successful than us in
keeping resolutions is something we will never know.
